Choose Life – “Hold On” – An Uplifting Verse from the OYB reading of the day – November 13

Scripture: Hebrews 11:1  NASB    “Hold On”

“By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was offering up his only begotten son . . . ” Hebrews 11: 17

There is a story told of a young girl whose favorite thing in the world was an imitation pearl necklace her father had given her.  She just loved it and took with her wherever she went.

One day, her father was sitting by the fireplace and called her to him.  He put her up on his lap and talked to her for a while.  Finally, he asked her for her necklace, her most prized possession.  She jumped off his lap and ran away.  The same thing happened several times over several days.

Finally, one night she sat up on her father’s lap by the fireplace and again her father asked for her necklace.  She gave it to him.  The second she gave it to him, he snapped it and threw it into the fireplace.  She gasped and before she could start to cry, her father reached into the pocket of his jacket and pulled something out.  He handed it to her.  She couldn’t believe what she was looking at.  He had handed her a necklace made of real pearls!  It was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen!

How often are we like that little girl?  God asks us to give something up but we balk and get uncomfortable, usually walking away from Him.  We just don’t believe that our loving Heavenly Father wants the best for us.

Abraham had learned over the years that when Yahweh asked him to something, it was the best thing for him.  So Abraham was willing to wait even when God asked him to sacrifice the son for whom he had waited for about twenty-five years till he was about 100 years old!

Is there something you’re asking God for?  Have you been waiting for a long time for an answer?  Have you waited as long as Abraham?

Psalms 27:14 (NIV) says, “Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD.”

And when you do, you will find that are choosing life (Deut. 30:19)!

Fun Application:

“Waiting on God” used to be a thing.  It used to be a spiritual discipline.  Not anymore.  We don’t hear about it.  Yet Scripture says,

Psa. 37:7, ”  Rest in the LORD and wait patiently for Him; Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, Because of the man who carries out wicked schemes.”

Psa. 37:34, “Wait for the LORD and keep His way, And He will exalt you to inherit the land; When the wicked are cut off, you will see it.”

Psa. 147:11, “The LORD favors those who fear Him, Those who wait for His lovingkindness.”

Isa. 40:31, “Yet those who wait for the LORD Will gain new strength; They will mount up [with] wings like eagles, They will run and not get tired, They will walk and not become weary.”

Lam. 3:25, “The LORD is good to those who wait for Him, To the person who seeks Him.”

And there are others.  Are you asking God for something?  Are you willing to wait?  It’s a sign of maturity.

Is “waiting on God” a “thing” with you?
